Instead of turning to chase the ball or simply giving way, the defender held his position blocking Mbappé's running path AND deliberately shifted body weight to his left leg to deliver a shoulder check on the running attacker. Mbappé fell from the contact. The on-field referee judged the contact as fair and waved play on; VAR did not intervene. On the merits, this is a missed penalty. Once the ball was past the defender via the nutmeg, the legal contest for the ball was over. The defender's deliberate body action — holding the line AND bracing to make contact — is textbook impeding-with-contact / charging without playing the ball under Law 12.
