Deep in stoppage time with Iran leading Egypt 2-1, Iran's #4 scored from a rebound but the goal was disallowed after a VAR offside check. The decision is correct. Offside is assessed at the moment the ball is last played by a teammate — here, the original shot. #4 was in an offside position at that moment (confirmed by semi-automated offside technology). The ball then rebounded off the goalkeeper / post / a deflection before #4 scored. Crucially, a rebound off the goalkeeper (a save) or the woodwork does NOT reset an attacker's offside — the player remains offside from the original phase. Offside only resets when a defender DELIBERATELY plays the ball (a controlled action, not a save or deflection), which did not happen here. So #4 became an active offside player by scoring the rebound, which is an offside offence. CORRECT DECISION, HIGH confidence — the goal was rightly chalked off. Note: offside is judged against the second-last defender (the last is usually the goalkeeper). The line here is set by #9; the keeper is deeper and off-screen. #4 is ahead of #9 → offside.
