USA #13 went to ground in a sliding challenge aimed at the ball, and Paraguay #10 also went down — but the frames show #10's body movement (arms splaying wide, theatrical drop) appearing inconsistent with absorbing a genuine physical impact. The referee initially showed a yellow card but mistakenly gave it to a USA defender rather than the Paraguay player who simulated. VAR intervened under the Mistaken Identity protocol — one of the defined reviewable categories — and the referee reviewed the footage at the pitchside monitor, rescinded the card from the wrongly-sanctioned USA player, and correctly issued the yellow card to Paraguay #10 for diving. This was the right final outcome: the simulation finding was sound, and the Mistaken Identity protocol worked exactly as designed to fix the card going to the wrong person.
