Incident
Goal cancelled — foul in build-up
Law cited
Law 12 + VAR protocol — a blatant, sustained shirt pull that prevents an opponent playing the ball is a clear holding foul, and a build-up foul this obvious is exactly the clear-and-obvious error VAR exists to correct.
Recommended action
Goal should have been disallowed AND penalty should have given to Egypt. The shirt pull was blatant and sustained — a hand on the collar, from outside the box to inside — done solely to stop Fathy playing the ball, and it directly started the possession that led to the goal.
Affected team
On-field decision
Goal given to Argentina + no VAR review on penalty for Egypt

In the build-up to Argentina's 3-2 winner, an Argentina defender blatantly held and pulled Egypt's Fathy by the shirt — from outside the box to inside — to stop him playing the ball, then Argentina won it and scored on an unbroken counter. Nothing was given and VAR stayed out. This is a wrong decision. A blatant, sustained shirt pull is a clear holding foul, and a build-up foul this obvious is exactly the clear-and-obvious error VAR must correct — the goal should have been disallowed. Note the same match disallowed Egypt's goal for a far softer build-up foul: the softer offence punished, the blatant one ignored, both favouring Argentina. WRONG DECISION, medium confidence.
