The assistant referee signalled the ball out of play before the cross that produced Spain's supposed Golden Goal. Under Law 9, the WHOLE of the ball must WHOLLY cross the entire goal line or touchline for it to be out of play — broadcast goal-line angles show part of the ball still overhanging the byline at the moment of contact, meaning the ball remained in play. Spain's goal should have been awarded; disallowing it was a clear refereeing error that contributed materially to Spain's elimination.
