The ball did not go out of play. In Frames 2 and 4, the clearest overhead views show the Spain player sliding with the ball positioned close to the touchline, but with the entire ball remaining inside the playing surface. Under the Laws of the Game, the whole of the ball must cross the whole of the touchline for the ball to be out. Since that did not happen, the referee was correct to allow play to continue, and the subsequent cross and Japan's winning goal were valid plays. The on-field decision to keep the ball in play stands as the correct call.
